What is Artificial intelligence?
A very popular intelligence-focused technique these days is machine learning, which is the ability of computer systems to extract meaning from data by allowing computers to learn from the situation they are confronted with, through the brute force of data. AI has been around since the early 1900s, but technology and the ability to process huge amounts of data have combined to push it past previous stages of sophistication. Today’s laptops have technologies similar to what the people at Stanford University have been able to apply to understanding the development of self-driving cars.
As the scientists at Stanford seek to code information from thousands of pictures and also provide concrete suggestions about what their photos tell us, they are succeeding. As Google’s Google Brain project looks at images captured by video, based on the stream of millions of data collected from hundreds of cameras, the team at Stanford is hoping to deploy machine learning (AGI) techniques to create “smart contracts” that can make unbiased decisions. Another example of AI that uses an incredibly cool name is Russia’s Viatta.
Be it locomotion, health, diagnosis, sensing, speech recognition, or learning from repetition, AI is rapidly becoming the most common process in machine learning. This form of AI uses prior knowledge about the programming problem to help a computer learn new. As more students begin to learn a programming language by themselves, AI will eventually even better, to the point where most teachers won’t need to teach it in the future. “Talking
to computers is a conversation, all the time,” says Jeremy Howard, the head of Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. “In the physical world, machines talk to each other all the time. For a high-level comprehension, this is much the same. In a computer, this is
extremely difficult.”
It is also exciting to think about all the other ways that artificial intelligence will increase the quality of life for those that work or live in the world. As machines autonomously convey knowledge of more complex information in an incredibly quick manner, one can imagine cities that suddenly disappear due to abandonment and have never existed before. Imagine an entire people-less world! With more computers capable of processing information without human assistance and the ability to learn new from the experience of how the earth works with life, machines will in the future be able to give help to everything in the world, its people, institutions, and relationships, the ability to better understand how our society works and to better solve problems in our societies that have arisen as a result of a large group of individuals working very hard to solve many different problems.
While there is no final definition of what artificial intelligence entails, if the term “artificial intelligence” seems totally vague, remember that the word “intelligent” can be defined as having the ability to grasp or mirror knowledge. It could also be explained as having the ability to comprehend something and put it into action or to modify something when required. But if we’re also looking at the term of a robot, we can think of it is even broader in scope. It is, for now, obvious that the intelligence would be developed by someone else, a maker, and that this maker would be greatly benefitted by the creation of his or her products. This doesn’t mean that everyone could not benefit from the capabilities of a machine, because as demonstrated by work done by AI in specific fields, there is a lot of potential for improving many different aspects of human life.
“Suppose you walk into an airport where your bag is late, and there is not a single individual wearing a face mask,” says Sean Gray, director of MIT’s Laboratory for Visual and Behavioral Information. “A smart motorizes the bag. When you approach that person at an airport check-in desk, your bag has to offer a bag that is fully charged. That’s the intelligence of face recognition.” Artificial intelligence will not only be able to take over mundane routines, but it will help us rediscover normal human interactions, like a bus stop agent that is in constant conversation with an employee that has to avoid catching their breath while expressing that the office lacks a sign telling them not to communicate with customers and show complete disdain for anyone who has to get frustrated. If you’re going to try and predict how AI will impact our lives, you don’t even have to tell yourself!
Just like anyone else in the world, AI has certain potential to greatly improve human interactions and systems of society, which are possible through advancements in the field of Artificial Intelligence. It is exciting to see an AI find its name come to the forefront of the media to indicate just how far AI has already gone and its lack of technical issues.
